MBSS stands for Modified barium swallow study, a rehabilitation abbreviation.
X-ray video examination of swallowing in which the patient eats and drinks barium-coated foods and liquids of different textures while a speech-language pathologist and radiology staff watch for aspiration and other problems.
Example: MBSS: silent aspiration with thin liquids; mildly thick liquids safe.
Usage notes
Also called videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS). The MBSImP protocol standardizes how components of the swallow are scored. It differs from a barium swallow or esophagram, which radiologists use to study the esophagus.
