NDD stands for National Dysphagia Diet, a rehabilitation abbreviation.
Older US standard for texture-modified diets, with levels NDD1 (pureed), NDD2 (mechanically altered) and NDD3 (advanced), plus categories of thickened liquids. It was published in 2002 by the American Dietetic Association.
Example: Diet order: NDD2 mechanically altered with thin liquids.
Usage notes
Many US facilities have replaced NDD terms with IDDSI levels to align with international standards. Different hospitals interpreted NDD categories inconsistently, which IDDSI aimed to fix. Old orders using NDD levels may still be encountered in long-term care.
