1. Mental health

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

State of emotional, psychological and social well-being, and the field and services addressing mental illness. In clinical shorthand, MH appears in service names, referrals and problem lists, such as MH clinic or MH crisis team.

Example: Referred to community MH services for ongoing therapy and medication management.

The WHO describes mental health as a state of well-being that enables people to cope with life's stresses, realize their abilities, learn and work well, and contribute to their community. "Mental Health First Aid" trains the public to respond to crises. In ophthalmology MH can mean macular hole.

2. Malignant hyperthermia

Medical · Anesthesia Abbreviations

Rare, life-threatening inherited reaction in which volatile inhaled anesthetics or succinylcholine trigger uncontrolled calcium release in skeletal muscle, causing rigidity, rapidly rising carbon dioxide, fast heart rate, high temperature, acidosis and muscle breakdown. Treatment means stopping the triggers immediately and giving intravenous dantrolene.

Example: Rising EtCO2 and masseter rigidity: MH protocol activated, dantrolene requested.

Most susceptible families carry variants in the RYR1 gene. The introduction of dantrolene in 1979 cut mortality from very high levels to a few percent. The Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS) runs a 24-hour hotline, and facilities using triggering agents must stock dantrolene. In psychiatry and public health MH means mental health.

3. Malaysia Airlines

Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations

Malaysia's national airline, based at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and a member of oneworld. It flies regional routes across Southeast Asia and long-haul services to London, Australia and North Asia.

Example: MH 1 from Kuala Lumpur to London Heathrow is the airline's flagship route.

ICAO code MAS; callsign "Malaysian." In 2014 the airline lost two Boeing 777s: Flight MH370, which disappeared on March 8, and Flight MH17, shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17. The airline was restructured under state ownership afterward.

4. Marshall Islands

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Pacific republic of 29 atolls and five islands with Majuro as its capital, in free association with the United States since 1986. The USPS uses MH for mail to the country.

Example: Mail to Majuro, MH uses a US ZIP code beginning 969.

The alpha-3 code is MHL, and news writing often uses RMI. The US conducted 67 nuclear tests in the islands between 1946 and 1958.
