METAR stands for Meteorological Aerodrome Report, an aviation abbreviation.
Coded routine weather observation for an airport, issued at least hourly and more often when conditions change, giving wind, visibility, present weather, cloud layers, temperature, dew point and pressure. Its format is set internationally by the World Meteorological Organization and ICAO, with some national variations.
Example: The 1453Z METAR for KJFK showed winds 310 at 12 knots, 10 miles visibility and a few clouds at 5,000 feet.
Usage notes
Unscheduled special observations are labeled SPECI. US reports give visibility in statute miles (10SM) and pressure in inches of mercury (A3012), while most other countries use meters and hectopascals (Q1013). Pronounced "MEE-tar" or "meh-TAR." Training materials sometimes give longer expansions, such as Meteorological Terminal Aviation Routine Weather Report.
