MTOW stands for Maximum takeoff weight, an aviation abbreviation.

Heaviest weight at which an aircraft is certified to begin its takeoff roll, set by structural and performance limits. An Airbus A320 has an MTOW of about 78 to 79 tonnes depending on version; the Airbus A380 is certified to 575 tonnes.

Example: With full fuel for the transpacific leg, the 777 departed only 400 kilograms below MTOW.

Usage notes

European documents often say MTOM (maximum takeoff mass). Related limits include maximum landing weight (MLW) and maximum zero-fuel weight (MZFW). An aircraft that must return soon after takeoff above its landing limit may dump fuel or make an overweight landing followed by an inspection. Landing fees at many airports are charged by MTOW.
