1. Liquefied natural gas

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Natural gas cooled to about -162 °C so it becomes a liquid occupying roughly 1/600 of its gaseous volume, allowing it to be shipped by tanker across oceans. At import terminals it is warmed back into gas and fed into pipelines.

Example: Europe sharply increased LNG imports after Russian pipeline deliveries fell in 2022.

The first LNG cargo crossed the Atlantic in 1959 aboard the Methane Pioneer, from Louisiana to Britain. The United States became the world's largest LNG exporter in 2023, ahead of Qatar and Australia. Methane leaks along the supply chain and the energy needed for liquefaction reduce LNG's climate advantage over coal.

2. Levonorgestrel

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Synthetic progestin used in emergency contraception pills (Plan B One-Step, 1.5 mg), many combined birth control pills and hormonal IUDs such as Mirena, Kyleena and Liletta.

Example: LNG 1.5 mg PO once within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.

Levonorgestrel emergency contraception has been sold over the counter without age restriction in the US since 2013. It works mainly by delaying ovulation and does not end an established pregnancy. Hormonal IUDs releasing LNG are among the most effective reversible contraceptives and also reduce heavy menstrual bleeding.
