LPV/r stands for Lopinavir/ritonavir, a drug abbreviation.
Co-formulated HIV protease inhibitor (Kaletra) in which low-dose ritonavir boosts lopinavir levels. It was widely used in second-line and pediatric HIV treatment and is available as tablets and oral solution.
Example: Infant on LPV/r oral solution twice daily; dose by weight.
Usage notes
Lopinavir/ritonavir oral solution contains alcohol and propylene glycol and is not recommended for premature newborns. It was tested for COVID-19 early in the pandemic, but large trials such as RECOVERY found no benefit. Newer regimens based on dolutegravir have largely replaced it.
