LUTS stands for Lower urinary tract symptoms, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Umbrella term for urinary symptoms divided into storage symptoms (frequency, urgency, nocturia) and voiding symptoms (weak stream, hesitancy, straining, incomplete emptying). In older men they are most often linked to prostate enlargement, but bladder dysfunction and other causes contribute.
Example: Moderate LUTS, IPSS 15, nocturia twice nightly; trial of tamsulosin 0.4 mg.
Usage notes
Pronounced "lutes". Severity in men is usually scored with the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), whose seven questions give a total from 0 to 35. The term replaced "prostatism" because similar symptoms occur in women and in men without prostate disease.
