CategoriesMedical

HoLEP stands for Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Surgery for benign prostatic enlargement that uses a holmium laser to shell out the obstructing prostate lobes, which are then morcellated and removed through the urethra. It works for prostates of any size, including very large glands.

Example: 130 g prostate with urinary retention; HoLEP planned instead of open simple prostatectomy.

Usage notes

HoLEP was developed in New Zealand in the late 1990s. Retreatment rates are very low because the tissue is removed down to the capsule. It has a steep learning curve, limiting availability. Pronounced "HO-lep".
