It often presents with visible blood in the urine during or just after a sore throat, or with persistent microscopic hematuria and proteinuria; roughly 20 to 40 percent of patients reach kidney failure within about 20 years.

Example: Episodic gross hematuria with URIs; biopsy shows mesangial IgA deposits, IgAN, MEST-C score M1 E0 S1 T0.

Usage notes

Also called Berger's disease, after French nephropathologist Jean Berger, who described it in 1968. Several new treatments, including targeted-release budesonide and sparsentan, gained FDA approval from 2021 onward. The MEST-C score grades biopsy findings. It is especially common in East Asia.
