HUS stands for Hemolytic uremic syndrome, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Thrombotic microangiopathy defined by hemolytic anemia with fragmented red cells, low platelets and acute kidney injury. Most childhood cases follow Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection, often O157:H7, a few days after bloody diarrhea.
Example: Bloody diarrhea a week ago, now schistocytes, platelets 42, creatinine 2.8: STEC HUS.
Usage notes
HUS is a leading cause of acute kidney injury in young children. Antibiotics are generally avoided in suspected STEC infection because they may increase toxin release. Atypical HUS, caused by complement dysregulation rather than infection, is treated with complement inhibitors such as eculizumab. Related to, but distinct from, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
