LBP stands for Low back pain, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.

Pain between the lower ribs and the buttock creases, the leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide. Most cases are nonspecific and improve within weeks, while a small minority are caused by serious conditions such as fracture, infection, cancer or cauda equina syndrome.

Example: Acute mechanical LBP after lifting, no red flags; advise activity, heat and NSAIDs, no imaging.

Usage notes

Guidelines, including the American College of Physicians (2017), advise against routine imaging in the first six weeks without red flags because findings rarely change care. Staying active is better than bed rest. Chronic LBP lasts more than 12 weeks. Pronounced as letters.
