L. Ed. stands for Lawyers' Edition, a legal citation abbreviation.
Unofficial reporter of Supreme Court decisions, originally published by Lawyers Cooperative Publishing and now by LexisNexis, covering every case from the Court's earliest decisions. Its editors add summaries of counsel's briefs and annotations discussing important cases.
Example: The brief gave parallel citations to U.S., S. Ct. and L. Ed. for every Supreme Court case.
Usage notes
Its full title is United States Supreme Court Reports, Lawyers' Edition. The first series ends in 1956; the second, L. Ed. 2d, begins with cases from volume 351 of U.S. Reports. Under the Bluebook it is cited only when a case is in neither U.S. nor S. Ct., and briefs that give parallel citations list it third.
