JVP stands for Jugular venous pressure, a cardiology abbreviation.
Estimate of central venous pressure made by measuring the vertical height of the internal jugular pulsation above the sternal angle and adding about 5 cm for the distance to the right atrium. A value above roughly 8 cm of water is considered elevated.
Example: JVP estimated at 14 cm H2O with prominent v waves, suggesting volume overload and tricuspid regurgitation.
Usage notes
The internal jugular vein is preferred over the external because it connects more directly to the right atrium. The waveform has a, c and v waves and x and y descents; giant "cannon" a waves occur when the atrium contracts against a closed tricuspid valve, as in complete heart block. Bedside ultrasound can improve accuracy when the neck is hard to examine.
