JPY stands for Japanese yen, a currency abbreviation.
Japan's currency, issued by the Bank of Japan and one of the most traded currencies in the world, valued as a safe haven during market stress. Prices are quoted in whole yen because no subunit is in use.
Example: The Tokyo hotel charges JPY 28,000 per night including breakfast.
Usage notes
The yen was introduced in 1871 to replace feudal coinages, and its subunit, the sen, was taken out of circulation in 1953. The word means "round object". Japanese price tags use 円, while international text uses ¥, a sign shared with the Chinese yuan. A new series of banknotes entered circulation in July 2024.
