1. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport

Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations

Spain's busiest airport and the main hub of Iberia, located about 12 kilometers northeast of central Madrid. It is Europe's leading gateway to Latin America.

Example: Iberia connects through MAD to almost every capital in Latin America.

ICAO code LEMD. Terminal 4, designed by Richard Rogers with a wavy bamboo-lined roof, won the Stirling Prize in 2006. The airport was renamed in 2014 for Adolfo Suárez, Spain's first democratically elected prime minister after Franco. Metro and commuter trains connect it to the city.

2. Mean absolute deviation

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations

The average of the absolute differences between each value and the mean, a simple measure of spread taught in middle school. For 2, 4, 6 and 8, the mean is 5 and the MAD is 2.

Example: Compute the MAD of the data set 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.

US Common Core standards introduce the mean absolute deviation in grade 6 as a first measure of variability, before standard deviation. Forecasters also use MAD for the average size of forecast errors, closely related to MAE. In currency markets, MAD is the code for the Moroccan dirham.

3. Median absolute deviation

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations

A robust measure of spread: the median of the absolute deviations of each value from the data's median. It is barely affected by outliers and is used in robust statistics and outlier detection.

Example: With a MAD of 2.1, any reading more than 3 MADs from the median was flagged.

Multiplying the MAD by about 1.4826 gives a consistent estimate of the standard deviation for normally distributed data. A common outlier rule flags points more than 3 or 3.5 scaled MADs from the median. The same initials are also used for mean absolute deviation, so check the definition.

4. Moroccan dirham

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Morocco's currency, issued by Bank Al-Maghrib and divided into 100 centimes. It is only partially convertible, and taking dirhams out of the country is restricted.

Example: The riad in Marrakesh charges MAD 900 per night.

The dirham is managed against a basket of the euro and US dollar, with a fluctuation band widened in 2018 and again in 2020, to ±5 percent. Moroccans often quote prices in older units such as rial or francs, which confuses visitors. Prices are written DH. In statistics, MAD means median or mean absolute deviation.
