JLPT stands for Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, a standardized test abbreviation.
Japanese test for non-native speakers, run by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services and held each July and December in Japan and around the world. Five levels range from N5 (basic) to N1 (advanced), and only reading and listening are tested.
Example: Many Japanese employers ask foreign applicants for JLPT N2 or higher.
Usage notes
The five-level system replaced the earlier four-level test in 2010. Because there is no speaking or writing section, a certificate does not prove conversational ability. N1 and N2 earn points under Japan's points-based system for highly skilled foreign professionals.
