ISEE stands for Independent School Entrance Examination, a standardized test abbreviation.

Admission test for private and independent schools from grade 2 through grade 12, published by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). Upper levels include verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics achievement and an unscored essay sent to schools.

Example: Most applicants to the day school submit ISEE scores along with teacher recommendations.

Usage notes

Scores are reported as stanines from 1 to 9 relative to other applicants, so a stanine of 5 is average within an already selective group. Families can test at a center, at home online or at a school, generally once per testing season. Many schools accept either the ISEE or the SSAT.
