JBOD stands for Just a bunch of disks, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Storage setup in which drives are presented individually or simply joined end to end, without striping or redundancy. The term also describes disk enclosures that add many drives to a server without their own RAID controller.
Example: We attached a 60-bay JBOD to the storage server and let ZFS manage the disks.
Usage notes
Spanning drives in JBOD adds their capacities together, but a single disk failure can lose the files stored on it, and sometimes more. Software-defined storage systems such as ZFS and Ceph prefer raw JBOD access so they can handle redundancy themselves. Some RAID controllers offer a "JBOD" or "HBA mode" that passes disks straight through.
