HBA stands for Host bus adapter, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Expansion card that connects a server or workstation to storage devices or storage networks, such as SAS and SATA disks or a Fibre Channel SAN, passing disks through without hardware RAID.
Example: We flashed the SAS HBA to IT mode so ZFS can see each disk directly.
Usage notes
Home-lab builders often buy used LSI or Broadcom SAS controllers and flash "IT mode" (initiator-target) firmware, turning a RAID card into a simple HBA for ZFS or Unraid. One SAS HBA with expanders can address dozens of drives. Fibre Channel HBAs connect servers to enterprise storage arrays.
