J.A. stands for Joint appendix, a litigation abbreviation.
Collection of the key parts of the lower-court record, such as pleadings, orders, transcript excerpts and exhibits, filed in an appeal so judges can review them. Briefs cite it by page, as in "J.A. 245".
Example: The jury instruction at issue is reproduced at J.A. 312, together with counsel's objection.
Usage notes
Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 30 governs the appendix in the courts of appeals, and Supreme Court Rule 26 requires one in cases granted review. The appellant usually prepares it. The Ninth Circuit instead uses excerpts of record (ER).
