CategoriesLaw & Legal

LCIA stands for London Court of International Arbitration, a litigation abbreviation.

Arbitral institution based in London, with origins dating to 1892, that administers international commercial arbitrations under the LCIA Rules. London is one of the world's most popular seats for international arbitration, partly because English courts rarely interfere with awards.

Example: The shipping contract provides for LCIA arbitration seated in London, with English law governing.

Usage notes

Despite the word "Court", it is an arbitral institution, not a state court. Its fees are based on arbitrators' hourly rates rather than the amount in dispute, unlike the ICC's. Arbitrations seated in England are governed by the Arbitration Act 1996 as amended in 2025.
