LOP stands for Letter of protection, a litigation abbreviation.
Letter from a personal injury lawyer to a medical provider promising payment from any settlement or judgment, so an uninsured or underinsured client can receive treatment without paying upfront. The provider may then bill full charges rather than discounted insurance rates.
Example: The orthopedist agreed to perform the surgery under an LOP from the client's attorney.
Usage notes
Common in Florida, Texas and Georgia personal injury practice. Defense lawyers argue LOPs inflate medical bills and bias treating doctors' testimony, and Florida's 2023 tort reform required disclosure of such arrangements. If the case is lost, the patient usually remains liable for the bill.
