ICHRA stands for Individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement, a health insurance abbreviation.
Employer-funded HRA, available since 2020, that reimburses employees tax-free for individual health insurance premiums and medical expenses instead of offering a group plan. Employers set allowances by employee class, such as full-time status or location, with no federal maximum.
Example: Company switched to an ICHRA: $500 a month toward any marketplace plan.
Usage notes
Pronounced "ICK-ra". Employees must be enrolled in individual coverage or Medicare to use it. An ICHRA deemed affordable makes the employee ineligible for marketplace premium tax credits. Supporters see it as a way for small and mid-sized employers to control costs while giving workers choice.
