ICD-10-PCS stands for ICD-10 Procedure Coding System, a health insurance abbreviation.

US system for coding inpatient hospital procedures, maintained by CMS, in which every code has exactly seven alphanumeric characters describing section, body system, root operation, body part, approach, device and qualifier. It is used only on hospital inpatient claims; physicians and outpatient settings use CPT and HCPCS.

Example: Inpatient coder assigned ICD-10-PCS 0DTJ4ZZ for the laparoscopic appendectomy.

Usage notes

ICD-10-PCS was developed for CMS by 3M Health Information Systems and replaced ICD-9-CM procedure codes in 2015. Its tens of thousands of codes are built systematically from the seven axes rather than listed individually. Procedure codes feed into DRG assignment and hospital payment.
