ICD-10 stands for International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, a health insurance abbreviation.
Tenth revision of the WHO disease classification, endorsed in 1990 and used internationally from the mid-1990s. In the United States its clinical modification (ICD-10-CM) and procedure system (ICD-10-PCS) replaced ICD-9 on October 1, 2015, and codes such as E11.9 (type 2 diabetes without complications) appear on every claim.
Example: Claim rejected: the ICD-10 code must specify laterality.
Usage notes
ICD-10 codes are alphanumeric and begin with a letter, unlike the mostly numeric ICD-9 codes. The US transition was postponed several times because of the cost of retraining coders and updating software. US code updates take effect each October 1.
