1. Insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio
Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations
Number of grams of carbohydrate covered by one unit of rapid-acting insulin, used to calculate meal doses in intensive insulin therapy. A ratio of 1:10 means one unit for every 10 g of carbohydrate.
Example: ICR 1:12 at breakfast and 1:15 at lunch and dinner; recheck after a week of logs.
Often written I:C or "carb ratio". Starting ratios are commonly estimated with the "500 rule" (500 divided by total daily insulin dose). Many people need a stronger ratio at breakfast because of morning insulin resistance. Pump and smart pen software store different ratios for different times of day.
2. Interest coverage ratio
Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations
Ratio of operating earnings, usually EBIT or EBITDA, to interest expense, showing how many times a company could pay its interest bill from profits. It is a standard credit metric in loan covenants and ratings analysis.
Example: With EBIT of $300 million and interest of $60 million, the ICR is a comfortable 5.0x.
Also called times interest earned (TIE). A ratio below about 1.5x is generally viewed as risky, and below 1.0x earnings do not cover interest at all. Central banks and researchers use persistently low interest coverage to identify so-called zombie companies.
