HLG stands for Hybrid log-gamma, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

HDR format developed by the BBC and Japan's NHK for live broadcasting, designed so that one signal displays properly on both HDR and standard TVs without metadata.

Example: The broadcaster transmits the match in 4K HLG, which still looks normal on older sets.

Usage notes

HLG was introduced in 2015 and standardized with PQ, the HDR10 approach, in the ITU's Rec. 2100 recommendation in 2016. Its backward compatibility suits broadcasters, which cannot send separate HDR and SDR feeds easily. YouTube accepts HLG uploads, and many phones and cameras record HLG video.
