1. Hyperlipidemia

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Elevated levels of lipids in the blood, especially LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, a major modifiable risk factor for atherosclerosis. It sits on problem lists alongside hypertension and diabetes and is usually managed with diet, exercise and statins.

Example: PMH significant for HTN, HLD and obesity; last LDL 162, starting atorvastatin 40 mg.

Often used loosely for dyslipidemia, which also covers low HDL cholesterol. The shorthand is mainly a US charting habit; the alternative HL is best avoided because it also means Hodgkin lymphoma. US lipid management follows the 2018 multisociety cholesterol guideline, while Europe uses the ESC/EAS dyslipidaemia guideline, which sets lower LDL targets for very-high-risk patients.

2. Hold

Sports · Baseball Abbreviations

Credit to a relief pitcher who enters in a save situation, records at least one out and leaves without giving up the lead, without finishing the game. Holds measure setup relievers.

Example: The setup man led the league with 34 HLD.

Introduced by statisticians in the 1980s, it is tracked widely but has never become an official MLB statistic. Fantasy leagues often count holds to give value to middle relievers.
