IBB stands for Intentional base on balls, a baseball abbreviation.

Walk issued on purpose to avoid a dangerous hitter or set up a force play. Since 2017 MLB managers simply signal for the walk, and no pitches are thrown.

Example: They issued an IBB to Bonds with the bases empty in the ninth inning.

Usage notes

Tracked officially since 1955. Barry Bonds was walked intentionally 120 times in 2004, more than most teams in a season, and holds the career record of 688. Critics say the no-pitch rule removed occasional wild pitches and drama.
