1. Heart Rhythm Society

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

International professional organization for electrophysiologists and allied professionals specializing in heart rhythm disorders, founded in 1979 as the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE). It co-authors guidelines on atrial fibrillation, device therapy, syncope and ventricular arrhythmias.

Example: The 2023 ACC/AHA/ACCP/HRS atrial fibrillation guideline introduced new AF stages.

The society adopted its current name in 2004 and publishes the journal HeartRhythm. Members can hold the designation FHRS, and its annual Heart Rhythm meeting is where major ablation and device trials are presented. In everyday writing "hrs" is simply the plural of hours.

2. Hepatorenal syndrome

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Functional kidney failure in advanced cirrhosis caused by intense renal vasoconstriction, without structural kidney damage. The acute form, now called HRS-AKI, is treated with albumin plus vasoconstrictors such as terlipressin or norepinephrine, while liver transplantation is the definitive cure.

Example: Creatinine up to 2.4 despite albumin challenge; HRS-AKI suspected, starting terlipressin.

Terlipressin was approved in the US in 2022 for HRS with rapidly declining kidney function. The International Club of Ascites redefined the syndrome in 2015, renaming type 1 HRS as HRS-AKI. Diagnosis requires excluding shock, nephrotoxic drugs and structural kidney disease.

3. Hours (military time) (hrs)

Units & Measurements · Time Abbreviations

Appended to 24-hour clock times in military, police, emergency-service and aviation writing, as in 0600 hrs or 1430 hrs. Spoken aloud, 1430 hrs is "fourteen thirty hours".

Example: All personnel report to the hangar at 0600 hrs for the mission briefing.

The 24-hour system runs from 0000 (midnight) to 2359, removing the need for AM and PM. Some style guides consider hrs redundant after a four-digit time, but it remains standard in US armed forces orders and law-enforcement reports. Elsewhere hrs is simply the plural of hr, as in 8 hrs of sleep.
