CategoriesTechnology & Computing

HAMR stands for Heat-assisted magnetic recording, a computer hardware abbreviation.

Hard drive technology that uses a tiny laser on the write head to heat a spot of the platter for a fraction of a nanosecond, allowing data to be written on extremely stable, high-density media. It enables drives of 30 TB and more.

Example: The data center is replacing 20 TB disks with 30 TB HAMR drives to save rack space.

Usage notes

Seagate spent about two decades developing HAMR and began shipping drives based on its Mozaic 3+ platform to cloud data centers in 2024, with retail models following in 2025. The heated spot cools instantly, locking the magnetic bits in place. Western Digital pursued a different energy-assisted approach before also committing to HAMR. Pronounced like "hammer".
