GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System, a telecom abbreviation.

General term for satellite navigation systems with worldwide coverage: the US GPS, Russia's GLONASS, the European Union's Galileo and China's BeiDou. Modern phones use several systems at once for better accuracy and faster fixes.

Example: The receiver tracks 32 GNSS satellites across GPS, Galileo and BeiDou.

Usage notes

Regional systems such as Japan's QZSS and India's NavIC supplement global ones. Using several constellations improves accuracy in cities, where buildings block much of the sky. Dual-frequency phone receivers, available since 2018, reduce errors caused by the ionosphere and signal reflections. GNSS jamming and spoofing near conflict zones have disrupted aviation and shipping.
