GHD stands for Growth hormone deficiency, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Inadequate growth hormone production from pituitary or hypothalamic disease, congenital defects, tumors, surgery or radiation. Children present with slow growth and short stature; adults with reduced muscle, increased fat, low energy and reduced bone density.
Example: Height velocity 3.5 cm/year, delayed bone age, failed two stimulation tests: GHD, start somatropin.
Usage notes
Diagnosis usually requires two provocative stimulation tests in children because random GH levels are uninformative. Weekly long-acting GH formulations became available in the early 2020s as alternatives to daily injections. Adult GHD most often follows pituitary tumors or their treatment.
