GAWR stands for Gross axle weight rating, an automotive abbreviation.
Maximum weight a single axle is designed to carry, listed separately for front and rear axles on the door-jamb sticker. Heavy trailer tongue weight or bed loads can exceed the rear GAWR even if total weight is within GVWR.
Example: The scale showed the rear axle 400 pounds over its GAWR, so we moved the toolbox forward.
Usage notes
Truck stops' certified scales weigh each axle separately so drivers can check compliance. Weight-distribution hitches shift some tongue weight to the front axle to stay within ratings. Commercial vehicles face separate legal axle limits on public roads.
