GTI stands for Gran Turismo Iniezione (grand touring injection), an automotive abbreviation.
Badge for a sporty, fuel-injected version of a car, made famous by the Volkswagen Golf GTI of 1976, which helped create the hot hatchback category. Peugeot, Suzuki and others have used the badge too.
Example: The used GTI with the plaid seats and six-speed manual is my favorite car I've ever owned.
Usage notes
The Maserati 3500 GTi of 1961 was among the first production cars to use the initials. The "I" is variously given as Italian iniezione or English injection. The Golf GTI's tartan seat fabric and red grille stripe are signature design cues. GTI has become almost generic for affordable, quick hatchbacks.
