FCEV stands for Fuel cell electric vehicle, an energy abbreviation also used in transportation.
Electric vehicle that generates its electricity on board in a fuel cell combining hydrogen with oxygen from the air, emitting only water vapor. FCEVs refuel in about five minutes and have long range, but hydrogen stations are scarce and expensive.
Example: The Toyota Mirai is an FCEV with about 650 km of range from its three hydrogen tanks.
Usage notes
Hyundai began series production of a fuel cell SUV in 2013, and Toyota launched the Mirai in 2014. Most hydrogen today is made from natural gas, limiting climate benefits unless produced with clean electricity. Several California hydrogen stations closed in 2024, leaving some owners stranded; FCEVs are seen as more promising for trucks and buses.
