Esth. stands for Esther, a Bible book abbreviation.
Book of ten chapters telling how Esther, a Jewish queen of Persia, and her cousin Mordecai foil Haman's plot to destroy the Jews, the origin of the festival of Purim. Mordecai's words "who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" (4:14) are widely quoted.
Example: The Purim story is read from the scroll of Esth. each year.
Usage notes
SBL writes Esth, Chicago's traditional list leaves Esther unabbreviated and short forms use Est. The Hebrew book never mentions God, while the Greek version adds prayers known as the Additions to Esther. Jews read it from a scroll called the Megillah.
