Dan. stands for Daniel, a Bible book abbreviation.
Book of 12 chapters combining stories of Daniel and his friends at the Babylonian court, such as the fiery furnace (chapter 3), the handwriting on the wall (chapter 5) and the lions' den (chapter 6), with apocalyptic visions. Parts are written in Aramaic.
Example: The phrase "weighed in the balances, and found wanting" comes from Dan. 5:27.
Usage notes
SBL writes Dan, and short forms use Dn. Catholic and Orthodox Bibles include additional Greek sections, such as Susanna and Bel and the Dragon. Jewish tradition places Daniel among the Writings rather than the Prophets.
