eFAST stands for Extended focused assessment with sonography for trauma, an emergency medicine abbreviation.

FAST exam extended with views of both sides of the chest to detect pneumothorax and hemothorax. It is now routine in many trauma bays.

Example: eFAST: absent lung sliding R, free fluid negative; chest tube placed.

Usage notes

Ultrasound can detect pneumothorax more sensitively than a supine chest X-ray. Absence of lung sliding suggests air between the lung and chest wall. The exam is performed by emergency physicians and trauma surgeons at the bedside.
