eMMC stands for Embedded MultiMediaCard, a computer hardware abbreviation.

Flash storage chip combining NAND memory and a controller in one package soldered onto a device's board, used in budget laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, TV boxes and older phones. It is cheaper but much slower than an NVMe SSD.

Example: The budget laptop has 64 GB of eMMC storage, so Windows updates fill it quickly.

Usage notes

eMMC is a JEDEC standard derived from the MultiMediaCard memory-card format. Its parallel interface tops out at roughly 400 MB/s in theory, and real-world speeds are usually lower. Because it is soldered, it cannot be upgraded, and when it wears out the whole board may need replacing. UFS has replaced eMMC in most mid-range and flagship phones.
