DVD-ROM stands for Digital Versatile Disc Read-Only Memory, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Pre-recorded DVD holding computer data, 4.7 GB on a single layer and 8.5 GB on a dual layer, about seven to twelve times a CD's capacity. It distributed software, operating systems and games, including those for the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox.
Example: Windows 7 came on a DVD-ROM, too big to fit on a CD.
Usage notes
The format launched in 1996 and 1997 alongside DVD-Video, which uses the same physical discs with a specific file structure. DVD-ROM drives also read CDs. Drive speed "1x" for DVD equals about 1.385 MB/s, so a 16x drive reads around 22 MB/s. Later, Blu-ray took over for game consoles and high-capacity distribution.
