EEPROM stands for Electrically erasable programmable read-only memory, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Non-volatile memory that can be erased and rewritten byte by byte with electrical signals, used for small amounts of settings and calibration data in microcontrollers, sensors and memory modules.
Example: The RAM stick's speeds and timings are stored in an EEPROM called the SPD chip.
Usage notes
Also written E2PROM and pronounced "double-E prom". EEPROM endures many write cycles but holds only kilobytes to a few megabytes. Flash memory, developed by Fujio Masuoka at Toshiba in the 1980s, grew from EEPROM by erasing large blocks at once, which made it cheap enough for SSDs and USB drives. Microcontrollers such as those on Arduino boards include a small EEPROM for saving settings.
