EGR stands for Exhaust gas recirculation, an automotive abbreviation.
Emissions system that routes a portion of exhaust gas back into the engine's intake, lowering combustion temperatures to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. A stuck EGR valve can cause rough idling, stalling or a check engine light.
Example: The diesel's EGR cooler clogged with soot, so the truck went into limp mode.
Usage notes
EGR systems became widespread in the US in the 1970s to meet Clean Air Act limits. Diesel engines rely heavily on EGR and are prone to carbon buildup in the valve and cooler. Removing or disabling EGR systems is illegal tampering under US federal law.
