1. Dilation and curettage
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Procedure in which the cervix is dilated and tissue is removed from the inside of the uterus with suction or a curette. It is used to manage miscarriage, remove retained pregnancy tissue and sample the uterine lining when evaluating abnormal bleeding.
Example: Missed abortion at 9 weeks; suction D&C under MAC, tissue to pathology.
Modern D&C for pregnancy tissue usually uses suction rather than sharp scraping, which is associated with more scarring. When performed for bleeding, it is often combined with hysteroscopy to see inside the uterus. A rare complication is intrauterine scarring (Asherman syndrome).

Example: The lesson on the Word of Wisdom draws on D&C 89.
The Doctrine and Covenants is one of the church's four standard works, along with the Bible, the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price. The Community of Christ uses a different edition with different section numbers. Section 89 contains the Word of Wisdom health code.
