CategoriesTechnology & Computing

ELK stands for Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana, a data & database abbreviation.

A popular stack for collecting, searching and visualizing logs: Logstash ingests and transforms log data, Elasticsearch indexes it for fast search, and Kibana provides dashboards. It is widely used for application monitoring and security analytics.

Example: Search ELK for the request ID to see every log line the failed payment produced.

Usage notes

All three tools are developed by Elastic, which renamed the bundle the Elastic Stack after adding the lightweight Beats shippers. A 2021 license change led Amazon to fork Elasticsearch as OpenSearch, and Elastic added an open-source AGPL option in 2024.
