CategoriesMedical

EBRT stands for External beam radiation therapy, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Radiation delivered from a machine outside the body, usually a linear accelerator, aimed at the tumor from several angles. It is the most common form of radiation therapy, distinct from brachytherapy, in which radioactive sources are placed inside or next to the tumor.

Example: Prostate cancer, intermediate risk: EBRT 70 Gy in 28 fractions plus 6 months of ADT.

Usage notes

Modern techniques shape and modulate the beams to fit the tumor closely, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy and stereotactic treatment. Proton therapy is another form of external beam radiation that deposits most of its energy at a specific depth, sparing tissue beyond the target. Patients are not radioactive after EBRT.
