CR3 stands for Canon Raw version 3, a file format abbreviation.
Current raw image format of Canon cameras, introduced in 2018, which uses a container structure similar to MP4 and offers an optional compressed "C-RAW" mode that saves storage with little visible quality loss.
Example: My editing app is too old to open the CR3 files from the R6, so I need an update.
Usage notes
The EOS M50 was the first camera to record CR3, and all of Canon's mirrorless EOS R models use it. Because CR3 differs substantially from CR2, many older raw converters could not read it until they were updated. C-RAW files are roughly 40 percent smaller than standard raw files.
