CRL stands for Crown-rump length, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Ultrasound measurement of an embryo or fetus from the top of the head to the bottom of the rump, the most accurate way to date a pregnancy in the first trimester, typically within about five to seven days.
Example: CRL 23 mm consistent with 9w0d; EDD confirmed.
Usage notes
CRL dating is used from about 7 weeks until 13 6/7 weeks, after which head and body measurements replace it. Nuchal translucency screening is performed when the CRL is roughly 45 to 84 mm. A CRL of 7 mm or more without cardiac activity is one criterion for diagnosing early pregnancy loss.
