BSO stands for Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Surgical removal of both fallopian tubes and both ovaries, often performed with hysterectomy or alone to reduce cancer risk. In premenopausal women it causes immediate surgical menopause.
Example: BRCA1 carrier, age 37, completed childbearing; risk-reducing laparoscopic BSO.
Usage notes
Risk-reducing BSO is recommended for BRCA1 carriers around 35–40 and BRCA2 carriers around 40–45 because it greatly lowers ovarian and fallopian tube cancer risk. Many high-grade "ovarian" cancers now appear to start in the fallopian tubes, which is why salpingectomy alone is increasingly offered. RSO and LSO denote right- or left-sided removal.
